New Winners Of The Epic India Prizes:
Richard Marcus
8 February 2008, 09:20Well we’ve four new winners of our Epic India prize with two of them coming in our new category of best Visual Arts contribution. Devraj Khastagir has been awarded for his beautiful carvings from gourds, pictures of which can be found on our pages twice. First an introduction to his work, and then in more detail. Congratulations Devraj, and all of us at Epic India wish you the best in your future endeavours.
Our second Visual Arts prize is awarded to Kishor Gordhandas for his wonderful exploration and explanation of Ganjifa; the uniquely Indian playing cards. “A Short History Of Ganjifa” was filled with so much colour and detail that we needed two parts to share it with our audience. You can read Part One and Part Two any time you want on the pages of Epic India Magazine. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with all of us Kishor and we hope to read more of your work soon.
We also have two winners in our Epic India Prize for Writing, one to a relative newcomer to our pages, and the other, our first repeat winner. Nimi Kurian has been impressing Epic India readers with her short fiction ever since she published her first story “Door Number 38” Here she showed her willingness to write about a reality that too many people might want to deny still exists. Yet, she has also shown herself to be possessed of a wicked sense of humour as is shown by her most recently published story “Celebrating Onam” where a put upon wife gains her vengeance upon a lazy, complaining, lout of a husband. We’ve all grown to appreciate Nimi’s talents and look forward to each of her contributions.
Vinod Joseph returned to the pages of Epic India in mid November of 2007. After gifting us with his first collection of short stories A Taste Of Kerala – Stories From Simhapara, which can be read at Vinod’s Epic India author’s page, he has kept us supplied with a steady supply of fine short fiction. Elegantly written, there’s not a wasted word amongst them, they are as delightful to read as they are sometimes surprising. Vinod won previously for his collection of stories from Kerala, and we take great pleasure in selecting him again for his more recent work. Thank you Vinod and congratulations again.
Thank you to all our contributors at Epic India Magazine, we value all your efforts highly, but occasionally some lights do shine a little brighter than others. Congratulations again to Devraj Khastagir, Kishor Gorhandas, Nimi Kurian, and Vinod Joseph.
