Goa/Psychedelic Trance the Rock-n-Roll Of The 21st Century!

One of the most important ritualistic dance movements in recent history has been the goa or the newage psychedelic dance movement. While this movement rapidly came into existence in the late 80s it has already dissappeared in most parts of the world, with the artists and organising crews given the “illegal” stamp by most governments. Being a communal harmonic music that focuses on spiritual growth as well as challenging the norms by being a strong community, it’s easy to see why the authorities never allowed such a counter-culture to go on.
Moving away from the political troubles, the music still remains with us. Now, everyone has the oppurtunity to make ritual in their own homes or gardens, using the knowledge and power discovered by the freaks and artists, thanks to the Internet.
It is my pleasure and honour to present this deep, hypnotic form of active meditation music to you. So here’s a brief laydown of how you may proceed to develop a taste and, finally, understand and be part of this trancendental dance experience.
1. The Classic Goa Trance
It all began to be powerful in the early 90s. Artists from Germany, Israel, Russia, Brazil and many different parts of the world created this music for the 1st time. Among the most notable were Juno Reactor, Eat Static, Astral Projection, Etnica, Hallucinogen , and Man With No Name , as detailed on Wikipedia.
Examples of this music are available via free albums like the following: Golden Vibes and
Elysium – Regenerated
2. The Full-on Sound
Full on is a form of psychedelic trance that originated in Israel during the late 90’s. Artists associated with the style are : Bizzare Contact and Astrix.
Here are some free albums that are examples of the full-on flavour –
Dissociative – Underwater Lab
PsyInvasion
3. Dark Psychedelic Trance
Dark psytrance is a darker, faster and more distorted form of psychedelic trance music, with tempo ranges usually from 145 to 180 BPM. Originating in Russia and Germany, the style has recently expanded to other countries worldwide. The following free albums are examples of the dark psytrance genre – Cosmogenezis and
Rest in Pieces
4. Progressive
With a slower BPM range of about 125 to 145, Progressive Psytrance has a cleaner, crisper sound than other sub genres and is better known for well constructed percussion underlying a complicated series, or evolution, of musically rooted melodies. At times up lifting Progressive Psy has made a home for itself during the morning and day time sets of many outdoor dance parties. Particularlly the Australian Doof’s Labels as well as the Australian music label Zenon; releasing music from artists such as Sensient, Tetrameth and Shadow FX are two reputable sources of this sub Genre. Here’s a mix by a good friend which showcases this wonderful and groovy form of music you can dance all day to!
Dj Basilisk – Live at Eclipse 2009
It is very difficult to summarise a genre of music which has more than 2000 artists with many of them being really great projects. It is perhaps because of the high spiritual levels that the listeners experience that they can not stop themselves from getting in the studio and make some funky grooves themselves that so many varied projects exist !!
And finally, BOOM is a wonderful music festival that still continues with a happy clean vibe that you may want to attend if you really dig this groovy genre of music.
