Two Birthdays

August 15 1872 was the birthday of an immortal sage-
To usher in the Supramental Age
He came a mortal’s life to adorn again.
Apostle of Spiritual Nationalism
He raised the nation to the height
With spiritual force and light.
His vision of freedom surpassed the nation and the globe
Over the whole universe, in times present and future,
Was spread his robe.
The fighter had visioned the fruition of his labor and dream
At all events even, at moments extreme.

In the great relay-race the movement had passed on
From one to the other leaders’ hands
But the force and light and strength lost the commands
As the leaders at the end raised their personal demands.

A sick India was born
Maimed; bleeding profusely and torn.

August 15 1947 was the birthday of Indian Freedom-
It had the seal and sanction of the supreme wisdom
Which linked the two birthdays under its holy kingdom.
The dreamer had seen the visage of a united Mother India:
Let us not cripple her further, nor divide the mighty Himalaya
Let us rejoin her limbs, making the union happy and free
Using the heart of the nation for a perfect plastic surgery.
